Stéphane La Rue: Interstice
Stéphane La Rue se consacre à une investigation méthodique des phénomènes visuels liés à la couleur et à la lumière. Les formes appliquées ou dessinées sur la surface avec un minimum d’interventions apparaissent ordonnées ou savamment désarticulées et entretiennent toujours une relation étroite avec le plan pictural. Dans ses oeuvres, la clarté de la matière s’affirme comme un substitut de la pureté de la forme prônée par le modernisme. L’artiste fait la sourde oreille aux limites tracées par la spécificité des arts. Il sculpte le support, retrace et dépeint ses pourtours.
Les oeuvres de Stéphane La Rue ont été présentées dans plusieurs expositions individuelles au Canada, notamment au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, à la Galerie Roger Bellemare / Christian Lambert et à la Art Gallery of York University, à Toronto, ainsi qu’à la Galerie de l’UQAM, à Montréal ; au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec et à la Fondation Molinari. Finalement, le travail fut montré à la Trépanier Baer Gallery, à Calgary et à Diaz Contemporary, à Toronto Il a participé à plusieurs expositions collectives, notamment à New York, Lyon, Istanbul et au Luxembourg. Il a participé à la Triennale québécoise en 2011 ainsi qu’à la Biennale canadienne en 2014. Ses oeuvres font partie de plusieurs collections publiques, privées et d’entreprises au Canada et au États-Unis.
Stéphane La Rue focuses on the methodical investigation of visual phenomena linked to colour and light. With a minimum of interventions, the forms he applies or draws on the surface appear orderly or cleverly distorted and are always in close relationship to the pictorial plane. In his work, the clarity of intentions towards material becomes a substitute for the purity of form extolled by modernism. La Rue ignores the limits traced by the specificities of genre in art: he sculpts the support, and retraces and depicts its perimeters.
He has had several solo exhibitions across Canada, at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Galerie Roger Bellemare / Christian Lambert and Galerie de l’UQAM in Montréal, the Art Gallery of York University in Toronto, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and at La Fondation Molinari (Montréal) among others. He exhibited at TrépanierBaer in Calgary and Diaz Contemporary in Toronto. He has participated in several group exhibitions, most notably in New York City, Lyon (France), Luxenbourg and Istanbul. He partook in the Triennale québécoise in 2011 and the Canadian Biennial in 2014. His works are found in a number of public, private and corporate collections in Canada and in the U.S.A.
