« En mars 2020, la ville dans laquelle je vis, ainsi que de nombreuses autres dans le monde, a été placée en confinement. L’atelier était un refuge, mais, sans surprise, je ne pouvais plus m’y concentrer. Il était difficile de continuer à peindre comme si les choses étaient normales parce que, eh bien, elles ne l’étaient pas. J'ai dû trouver une manière différente de m'engager dans le travail et cela s'est manifesté par un changement de posture physique. Baisser la tête pour travailler sur du petit papier m’a semblé être une position plus appropriée pour affronter la situation actuelle — une inclination absolue »

La Galerie Nicolas Robert est heureuse de présenter A Bow Down, la deuxième exposition de Magalie Guérin à la galerie. Entamée pendant la période de confinement au printemps dernier, cette nouvelle série se distingue de sa pratique par une nouvelle approche plus directe et instantanée, rendue possible grâce à l’utilisation du papier. Ce médium confortable, indulgent et propice à l’expérimentation permet à l’artiste de changer le rythme et la structure du travail en atelier, lui permettant de s’acclimater au nouveau contexte cette période incertaine et angoissante résultant de la pandémie. Originaire de Montréal, Magalie Guérin vit et travaille à Chicago. Détentrice d’une maîtrise en peinture et dessin de la School of the Art Institute de Chicago (2011), son travail a récemment été présenté à la Amanda Wilkinson Gallery, London (UK); Chapter NY, New York; James Harris, Seattle; Corbett vs Dempsey, Chicago; Schwarz Contemporary, Berlin; et Anat Egbi, Los Angeles. Elle est l’auteure de NOTES ON, une compilation d'écrits de studio publiés par The Green Lantern Press en 2016 et son travail fait partie de la collection du DePaul Museum, de la collection Hydro-Québec et celle de la Caisse de dépôt et de placement du Québec. Magalie Guérin est récipiendaire de la bourse de la Fondation Pollock-Krasner (2018), de la résidence de la Chinati Foundation (2018) et du Stephen Pace Residency Award pour peintre en milieu de carrière au Fine Arts Work Centre de Provincetown (2019).
“In March 2020, the city I live in, along with many others around the world, went on lockdown. The studio was a refuge but, unsurprisingly, I couldn’t focus much. It was hard to justify continuing the old paintings as if things were normal because, well, they weren’t. I had to find a different way to engage with the work and that manifested itself as a change in physical stance. Putting my head down to work on small paper on a table felt like the more appropriate body position to tackle the current condition — an absolute bow down”

Galerie Nicolas Robert is pleased to present A Bow Down, the second exhibition of Magalie Guérin with the gallery. Initiated during the lockdown last spring, this new series sets itself apart from her practice with a new, more direct and instant approach, made possible through the use of paper. This comfortable, indulgent and experimental medium allows the artist to change the rhythm and structure of studio work, allowing her to adjust to the new normal of this uncertain and anxious time resulting from the pandemic.
Born in Montreal, Magalie Guérin lives and works in Chicago. In 2011, she received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions were presented at Amanda Wilkinson Gallery, London (UK); Chapter NY, New York; James Harris, Seattle; Corbett vs. Dempsey, Chicago; Schwarz Contemporary, Berlin; and Anat Egbi, Los Angeles. Her work is in the collection of DePaul Art Museum, Hydro-Québec and Caisse de dépôt et de placement du Québec. She is the author of NOTES ON, a compilation of studio writings published by The Green Lantern Press in 2016. She was recently awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant (2018), a Chinati Foundation residency (2018), and the Stephen Pace Residency Award for a Mid-Career Painter at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (2019).
